\u201cStone Check Dams in Ephemeral Island Streams\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-start=\"209\" data-end=\"508\">KIPA participated on Monday, March 9, in the seminar <strong data-start=\"262\" data-end=\"376\">\u201cStone Check Dams in Ephemeral Island Streams: From Tradition to Institutional Support for Climate Resilience\u201d<\/strong>, which was co-organized at the Eugenides Foundation by <strong data-start=\"432\" data-end=\"442\">MedINA<\/strong> and the <strong data-start=\"451\" data-end=\"507\">General Secretariat for the Aegean and Island Policy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"510\" data-end=\"983\">Kythera played a central thematic role during the seminar, both regarding the <strong data-start=\"588\" data-end=\"650\">restoration of the traditional small check dams in Karavas<\/strong>, a project carried out by KIPA in collaboration with MedINA in 2020, as well as the <strong data-start=\"735\" data-end=\"897\">completion of the broader check dam program implemented on the island as anti-erosion and flood-prevention measures following the wildfires of the past summer<\/strong>, based on a study by the Forestry Service and implemented by the company <strong data-start=\"971\" data-end=\"982\">ZITAKAT<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"985\" data-end=\"1384\">According to the <strong data-start=\"1002\" data-end=\"1136\">Director General of Forests and Forest Environment of the General Secretariat of Forests of the Ministry of Environment and Energy<\/strong>, Mr. <strong data-start=\"1142\" data-end=\"1167\">Evangelos Gkountoufas<\/strong>, a total of <strong data-start=\"1180\" data-end=\"1204\">291 stone check dams<\/strong> were constructed across <strong data-start=\"1229\" data-end=\"1256\">8,730 meters of streams<\/strong> (approximately every 30 meters), while <strong data-start=\"1296\" data-end=\"1361\">traditional dry-stone walls were restored along one kilometer<\/strong> in selected locations.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1386\" data-end=\"1661\">Specifically, interventions were carried out in the areas of <strong data-start=\"1447\" data-end=\"1510\">Pitsinades \u2013 Perlegkianika, Mylopotamos, Rizes \u2013 Kato Chora<\/strong>, as well as in the streams leading to <strong data-start=\"1549\" data-end=\"1561\">Limnaria<\/strong> and to the <strong data-start=\"1573\" data-end=\"1608\">Holy Monastery of Myrtidiotissa<\/strong>.<br data-start=\"1609\" data-end=\"1612\" \/>In total, the works included the construction of:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1663\" data-end=\"1760\">\n<li data-start=\"1663\" data-end=\"1691\">\n<p data-start=\"1665\" data-end=\"1691\"><strong data-start=\"1665\" data-end=\"1689\">331 stone check dams<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1692\" data-end=\"1715\">\n<p data-start=\"1694\" data-end=\"1715\"><strong data-start=\"1694\" data-end=\"1713\">30 log barriers<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1716\" data-end=\"1760\">\n<p data-start=\"1718\" data-end=\"1760\"><strong data-start=\"1718\" data-end=\"1760\">105 square meters of wooden structures<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1762\" data-end=\"2081\">\u201cThe project provides immediate protection against soil erosion\u2026 with expected benefits including the <strong data-start=\"1864\" data-end=\"1905\">replenishment of groundwater reserves<\/strong>, the <strong data-start=\"1911\" data-end=\"1948\">strengthening of local ecosystems<\/strong>, the <strong data-start=\"1954\" data-end=\"1994\">acceleration of natural regeneration<\/strong>, and the <strong data-start=\"2004\" data-end=\"2079\">retention of sediment in order to protect settlements and coastal zones<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2083\" data-end=\"2289\">It is expected that this seminar will lead to the <strong data-start=\"2133\" data-end=\"2214\">institutional recognition of the traditional practice of dry-stone check dams<\/strong>, paving the way for its wider implementation across the islands of Greece.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2291\" data-end=\"2688\">In light of these developments, we are particularly proud of our <strong data-start=\"2356\" data-end=\"2396\">productive collaboration with MedINA<\/strong> and of the joint work carried out by institutions and volunteers who participated in the <strong data-start=\"2486\" data-end=\"2515\">Karavas check dam project<\/strong>\u2014a partnership that placed our island at the forefront of innovation and led to the <strong data-start=\"2599\" data-end=\"2687\">first major soft-intervention restoration project in Kythera following the wildfires<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2690\" data-end=\"2874\">We will continue with the same vision and collaborative spirit in the remaining initiatives we are planning for <strong data-start=\"2802\" data-end=\"2873\">gentle ecological restoration and wildfire prevention on the
