A recent survey conducted by the members and friends of Kytherian Foundation for Culture and Development (KIPA) from January to October 2024, among the permanent population of Kythera, which amounts to 3,500 people, revealed that 2.5 million plastic water bottles were consumed in just ten months. This alarming number highlights the significant environmental impact of plastic waste on the island.<\/span><\/p>\n

In recent years, tourism in Kythera has increased dramatically, bringing both economic benefits and significant challenges. One of the most pressing issues is the quality and quantity of potable water. The available water supply is insufficient to meet the needs of both residents and tourists, especially during the hot summer months. Moreover, the quality of the water often becomes non-potable during this period, as confirmed by recent quality control tests. As a result, the only viable solution for many is to buy and consume water from plastic bottles imported in bulk from the mainland.<\/span><\/p>\n

Unfortunately, most of these empty plastic bottles remain on the island, often buried, causing significant environmental risks. It is vital for the sea, the land, and the people of Kythera to address this issue, starting with educating children in primary and secondary schools to raise awareness and encourage participation in recycling efforts.<\/span><\/p>\n

Kythera’s ecosystems are crucial for both marine and avian biodiversity, serving as an important migration route for birds from Africa to Europe. For thousands of years, Kythera has maintained a balanced ecological equilibrium, integrating the sea, the land, and human agricultural activities, supporting a variety of flora and fauna. This balance, maintained through mild human intervention, has preserved the island’s ecological integrity. However, Kythera is a closed ecosystem, and plastic waste dramatically and directly impacts its environment.<\/span><\/p>\n
