The «Kytherian Seed Ark» opens a new chapter for safeguarding Kythera's agricultural heritage. A significant first step towards preserving the agro-biodiversity of Kythera has become a reality through the creation of the «Kytherian Seed Ark,» a small community seed bank that currently houses 24 authentic Kytherian varieties.
The local varieties, as well as the knowledge that accompanies them, are a valuable part of the island's cultural and agricultural heritage.
It is the result of the long-standing relationship of people with the land of Kythira, a relationship that continues to this day thanks to those who insist on cultivating, preserving, and passing on this knowledge to future generations.
The «Kytherian Seed Ark» was created with the aim of preserving and regenerating local varieties, while simultaneously promoting sustainable development of agri-food on Kythera.
Within the scope of the project, the following were carried out: rapid recording of local varieties, documentation of local knowledge concerning their cultivation and use, seed collection, creation of a network of variety preservers, as well as the organization and operation of the community seed bank.
In parallel, a network of people actively involved in the conservation and reproduction of varieties has been created, while the «Kythira Seed Ark» now has the necessary equipment to host, protect, and gradually enrich this valuable genetic material.
The seeds of local varieties possess unique characteristics, as they are adapted to the particular climate and soil of Kythira, constituting a valuable element of the island's local agricultural identity and sustainable cultivation.
The contribution of the residents of Kythira was particularly significant, as they actively participated in the project, shared valuable knowledge about traditional crops, and offered the first seeds for the creation of the bank.
This initiative is the result of a long-standing collaboration between MedINA and the Kythira Foundation for Culture & Development (K.I.P.A.), with the support of the A.G. Leventis Foundation.
The contribution of the local project team was also crucial: Danae Sfakiánou, Peggy Vasileíou, Kiki Mávrou, George Kasimátis, and Rigas Zafiríou, as well as volunteers Masa Zussman and Federica Marmo. The contribution of the first preservers and seed donors was also significant: Antonia Samíou, Giota Fardúli, Nikos Kallígeros, Manolis Kasimátis, Theodoros Theodórou, and Gregoria Gianníoti.
To date, two distributions of local spring seeds have already taken place for community members, with the aim of continuing cultivation and multiplying the varieties.
The progress of this effort and the continuous expansion of the network of people actively contributing to the preservation of Kythira's agricultural heritage are eagerly awaited.
The vision of the initiative is for the «Kythira Seed Ark» to serve as the foundation for preserving all local varieties of the island, through a continuously growing network of preservers and an active community seed bank that will be able to distribute this valuable material to the cultivators-protectors of Kythira's land each year.
We invite everyone interested to actively participate in this effort—whether as seed donors or as new growers and preservers of varieties.
