Main Purpose of the Programme
The primary goal of the program is the substantial preservation, the institutional protection and further promotion of the timeless reputation and undeniable value of traditional Kytherian honey. The aim is to ensure its unique identity, so that it remains a top and competitive local product, inextricably linked to the island's cultural and natural heritage.
Strategic Actions and Implementation
To achieve this goal, the program focuses on the following key areas of action:
Systematic Recording and Scientific Study: Conduct extensive research and mapping of the rich and unique beekeeping flora that thrives in the individual areas of Kythira, with the aim of in-depth understanding of the local ecosystem.
Ecological Support for Endangered Species Targeted environmental interventions for the protection and enhancement of rare or endangered local flora species. This action is implemented with strict criteria and absolute respect for nature, explicitly ensuring the prevention of any alteration to the indigenous genetic material.
Strategic Apiary Placement: Providing incentives, technical guidance, and continuous encouragement to beekeepers, in order for them to place their hives in scientifically proven locations. This practice creates an ideal symbiosis: optimal plant pollination is achieved, which directly translates into maximizing production and ensuring honey of superior, recognized quality.
Strict Protection of Botanical Wealth: Taking drastic measures to protect valuable aromatic, medicinal, and apicultural plants (such as local thyme) from uncontrolled, illegal collection and illicit trade that degrade the natural environment.
Developing Strategic Partnerships Substantive and multi-level cooperation with a broad network of stakeholders—both from the public and private sectors (e.g., research institutions, local government, environmental organizations)—who specialize and are active in the field.
Socioeconomic Vision and Sustainability
The methodical modernization and systematic development of the sector
Beekeeping not only protects the environment but also functions as a strong attractant. It is expected to bring new people and aspiring beekeepers into Kythera's primary production sector. This renewal of human resources, combined with best practices, will have the direct and long-term consequence of sustainable development, boosting employment, and the overall economic prosperity of the local community.
