Press Release: Reforestation Study

KIPA informs the local community about the next steps following the conference “Kythera after the 2025 wildfire: Restoration – Regeneration – Prevention”, within the framework of the conclusions drawn for the strategic plan we have developed to mitigate the impacts of the recent wildfires on the island.

Specifically, following the on-site inspection conducted by the Forestry Service on Kythera, the only area that requires medium-term reforestation is the area surrounding the Monastery of Myrtidiotissa, for which a study has been requested. KIPA has undertaken, with a strong sense of responsibility, to fund this study.

Once the study is delivered and approved by the Forestry Service, we will announce the next steps that will follow, so that the relevant authorities and the residents of the island are properly informed and can participate in the process.

For all other areas, monitoring will be required over the coming years. The first indications show that nature is likely to recover on its own, without technical interventions, but with mild supportive actions that respect Kythera’s land, local identity and traditional practices.

Such actions will be coordinated in cooperation with expert scientists from organizations with which we have established partnerships, including:

  • The Hellenic Society for the Protection of Nature (HSPN)

  • WWF Greece

  • MedINA

  • IMDO / ELGO “Dimitra”

  • The University of the Aegean

A decisive role will also be played by the local community through volunteer participation and engagement.

KIPA has opened a special bank account for the Initiative for the Regeneration of Kythera following the Wildfires.

Those who wish to support the initiative may contribute by making a direct donation to the following account at the National Bank of Greece:

IBAN: GR0401103800000038000395780
SWIFT: ETHNGRAA

The account will remain open for as long as necessary in order to implement the proposed actions, beginning with the preparation of the study required by the Forestry Service to approve the reforestation project.

Every contribution, small or large, is welcome and important.
