The “Kytherian Seed Ark” Opens a New Chapter for Safeguarding Kythera’s Agricultural Heritage
An important first step towards preserving Kythera’s agricultural biodiversity has become a reality through the creation of the “Kytherian Seed Ark”, a small community seed bank currently hosting 24 authentic Kytherian seed varieties.
Local varieties, together with the knowledge accompanying them, form a valuable part of the island’s cultural and agricultural heritage.
They are the result of the long-standing relationship between people and the land of Kythera — a relationship that continues to this day thanks to those who persist in cultivating, preserving and passing this knowledge on to future generations.
The “Kytherian Seed Ark” was created with the aim of safeguarding and reproducing local varieties while strengthening the sustainable development of Kythera’s agri-food sector.
Within the framework of the project, the following actions were carried out: rapid documentation of local varieties, recording of local knowledge regarding cultivation and use, seed collection, creation of a network of seed keepers, as well as the organisation and operation of the community seed bank.
At the same time, a network of people actively participating in the preservation and reproduction of local varieties was established, while the “Kytherian Seed Ark” now possesses the necessary equipment to host, protect and gradually enrich this valuable genetic material.
The seeds of local varieties possess unique characteristics, as they are adapted to the specific climate and soil conditions of Kythera, representing an important element of the island’s agricultural identity and sustainable cultivation.
The contribution of the residents of Kythera was particularly important, as they actively participated in the initiative, shared valuable knowledge regarding traditional cultivation methods and offered the first seeds for the creation of the seed bank.
This initiative is the result of long-term collaboration between MedINA and the Kytherian Foundation for Culture & Development (K.I.P.A.), with the support of the A.G. Leventis Foundation.
A decisive contribution was also made by the local project team: Danae Sfakianou, Peggy Vasileiou, Kiki Mavrou, Giorgos Kasimatis and Rigas Zafeiriou, as well as volunteers Masa Zousman and Federica Marmo.
Important contributions were also made by the first seed keepers and donors: Antonia Samiou, Giota Fardouli, Nikos Kalligeros, Manolis Kasimatis, Theodoros Theodorou and Grigoria Giannioti.
To date, two distributions of spring local seeds have already taken place among members of the community, aiming to continue cultivation and multiplication of the varieties.
The progress of this effort and the continuous expansion of the network of people actively contributing to the preservation of Kythera’s agricultural heritage are awaited with great interest.
The vision of the initiative is for the “Kytherian Seed Ark” to become the foundation for safeguarding all local varieties of the island through a continuously expanding network of seed keepers and an active community seed bank capable of distributing this valuable material every year to the cultivators and guardians of Kytherian land.
We invite everyone interested to actively participate in this effort — either as seed donors or as new cultivators and preservers of local varieties.
