The FUTURAL Programme

The Kytherian Foundation for Culture & Development (KIPA), remaining faithful to its vision of transforming Kythera and Antikythera into models of sustainable development, actively participates as a key partner in the pioneering European programme FUTURAL (Horizon Europe).

FUTURAL (“Empowering the future through innovative smart solutions for rural areas”) is a flagship European Union project aiming to strengthen rural and island regions through the development of smart, digital and social innovations. In this way, the programme seeks to bridge the digital and economic gap between large urban centres and rural areas, while highlighting cultural heritage and strengthening local community infrastructures.

The Role of Kythera as a “Multi-Actor Pilot” (MAP)

Within the framework of the programme, Kythera has been selected as one of six European Multi-Actor Pilots (MAPs), representing Greece alongside regions from Austria, Belgium, Spain, Lithuania and Romania.

Led by KIPA, and in close collaboration with the Agricultural University of Athens (which coordinates the FUTURAL project) and the European think tank Lisbon Council, Kythera functions as a living lab where modern technologies are tested in practice to address real challenges of island life.

The 3 Digital Platforms Developed by KIPA for Kythera

KIPA’s participation in FUTURAL is translated into tangible and innovative digital tools for the island, structured around three central pillars:

1. Digital Education Platform (FUTURAL e-Learning)

From Workshops to Practice

Following a series of successful interactive workshops and open consultations with the local community, the modern e-learning platform:

futural-learning.eu

was created.

The platform offers specialised free courses in critical sectors for the future of the island, including:

  • Beekeeping
Supporting and promoting Kythera’s exceptional honey production.
  • Sustainable Water Management
A vital course addressing water scarcity and environmental sustainability.

Special emphasis was placed on younger generations through the design and implementation of a dedicated educational programme for primary school children, introducing them to environmental awareness and the protection of natural resources from an early age.

2. FixMyKytheraTrails Platform

Trail Maintenance & Protection

Building on the international recognition of the Kythera Trails network, the digital application FixMyKytheraTrails was developed.

The platform enables residents, hikers and visitors to become active citizens by reporting issues along the trails, such as:

  • fallen trees
  • damaged signage
  • blocked pathways

Using their mobile phones, users can confirm locations via GPS and upload photographs, allowing KIPA to coordinate immediate restoration actions.

3. Resilience to Shocks Platform

Monitoring the Bridge at Diakofti

The third platform is an especially innovative initiative focusing on infrastructure safety.

Through FUTURAL, specialised sensors were installed on the bridge at Diakofti, the main port of Kythera.

The platform collects and analyses real-time data, monitoring how the bridge’s structural stability is affected by:

  • vibrations
  • traffic loads
  • heavy vehicles and trucks

This tool provides valuable data for preventing deterioration and strengthening the resilience of the island’s most important gateway.

Community & Collaboration for the Future

The success of FUTURAL is based on the active participation of Kytherian society itself.

Through co-creation workshops, local residents contribute their ideas to the development of these digital solutions, demonstrating that technology can effectively serve rural and island communities.
